Doctoral Students from El Colegio de La Frontera Sur (Mexico) at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Sciences, UKSW – Erasmus+ KA171 Mobility Experience

In the winter semester of 2024/2025, the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Sciences at UKSW hosted two doctoral students from El Colegio de La Frontera Sur in Mexico as part of the Erasmus+ KA171 program:

Ms. Patricia Alejandra Becerra Lucio

Ms. Norka Maria Fortuny Fernandez

During their stay, they participated in courses dedicated to Erasmus+ students as well as in the UKSW Doctoral School. Additionally, they took part in a doctoral seminar under the supervision of Prof. Jerzy Romanowski, Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Sciences.

At the end of the semester, both doctoral students conducted lectures summarizing their research, sharing their expertise with the academic community:

The first lecture focused on the spatial organization of traditional home gardens on the Yucatán Peninsula. The presentation explored how local communities manage biodiversity in different climatic zones and the impact of environmental conditions on garden structure and functionality.

The second lecture examined the role of microorganisms in spontaneous fermentation, using mezcal production as a case study. The session highlighted how wild yeasts and bacteria influence the fermentation process, shaping the unique characteristics of this traditional beverage.

Reflections on Their Erasmus+ Experience

“The Erasmus+ KA171 program at UKSW expanded my knowledge in biological sciences and helped me gain confidence. I also had the opportunity to improve my English skills and learn some basic Polish phrases.”

– Ms. Norka Maria Fortuny Fernandez

“UKSW is an excellent university! Thanks to engaging lectures delivered by highly qualified faculty members, I was able to develop my academic interests. I also greatly appreciated the welcoming atmosphere and openness of both professors and students.”

– Ms. Patricia Alejandra Becerra Lucio

The participation of doctoral students from El Colegio de La Frontera Sur in the Erasmus+ KA171 program provided a valuable academic and cultural exchange. Their stay at UKSW fostered international collaboration and strengthened academic ties, enriching both their research experience and the university community.
