Polish dances, cuisine and language –
that was what the first Polish Culture Day at UKSW was about!
On October 27, 2023 International Relations Office and UKSW Welcome Centre organized the first Polish Culture Day full of dumplings, traditional dances and Polish language. The event was directed to all UKSW international students!
The Polish Culture Day started with official greeting by the Director of the International Relations Department who welcomed UKSW international students on behalf of herself and the Vice-Rector for Science and International Relations. Official welcome was followed by exceptional workshop on Polish national dances conducted by dr. Barbara Głasek from the UKSW School of Physical Education. All gathered student took a dance lesson during which they practiced such Polish dances as oberek, polonaise or krakowiak.
After dance workshop filled with lots of laughter and fun dr Vira Neszew together with Agata Królak and Jolanta Zalewska from UKSW School of Polish Language and Culture conducted Polish language lesson. Students had the opportunity to learn some basic words and phrases useful in everyday life.
Next, the time has come for… Polish “pierogi”! Mrs. Danuta Kosińska, Team Member of UKSW Welcome Centre put on a show of making traditional Polish dumplings. Students had the opportunity to test their culinary skills in practice and make some dumplings on their own. Afterwards they were treated with professionally prepared “pierogi” stuffed with various fillings.
Last but not least a rousing workshop on Polish traditions and customs were conducted by Fr. Dr. Mariusz Boguszewski from the Faculty of Theology at UKSW.
Polish Culture Day gained great appreciation of UKSW international students who shared their thoughts of this event with UKSW Welcome Centre:
Ines (Germany)
“I was very sad that I couldn’t participate in the whole event. I especially regret missing the dance classes. I definitely recommend participating in this type of events and I will definitely look for similar events in the future during my next Erasmus+. This is definitely a great introduction to getting to know the culture of the country you are currently in.”
Chiara (Cattolica del Sacro Cuore/ Brescia campus, Italy)
“I liked it very much. It was very nice. I also appreciate the fact that also vegan dumplings were prepared for us. Polish language classes and dance classes were also well organized. I had a great time. Thank you again for organizing this event.”
Keje (Ibrahim Cecen University of Agri, Türkiye)
“It was a very nice day. I didn’t think I would have so much fun during dance classes. I have never tried food other than Turkish food in Poland. Polish Culture Day gave me the opportunity to try local food. What I liked the most was the dumpling-making workshops. I plan to make them for my family when I return to Turkey. Polish language classes were also very interesting”
Sumeyye (Yalova University, Türkiye)
“I had a lot of fun. I learned a lot of interesting information about Polish culture and traditions. Thank you very much!”
Polish Culture Day wouldn’t be such a success if not the help of some UKSW Units. That is why we sincerely thank the many people who supported International Relations Office and UKSW Welcome Centre in organization of this event. We would like to thank the UKSW Library, UKSW School of Polish Language and Culture, UKSW School of Physical Education, the Faculty of Theology, UKSW Communication and Promotion Office and all other Faculties and Units directly involved in the organization and promotion of the event.
